Could mobile shopping be even bigger than internet shoping?
Smartphones are playing a critical role in purchasing decisions, according to a new study released.
The study, by ForeSee Results, surveyed 10,000 visitors to top e-retailer sites, found that 11% made a purchase using their phones in the Christmas shopping period, up from just 2% the same time last year.
Thirty percent of people used their phones this Christmas to compare product details, prices, or to find store locations. In 2009 just 11% of consumers used their phones to research in this way. Those who were highly satisfied with a retailer’s mobile experience were 30% more likely to buy from that retailer both online and offline.
The use of mobiles in retail is growing even faster than the early days of Internet shopping
eBay reported that mobile shopping on its app increased 134% in December, and Amazon’s turnover from mobile sales has just passed $1 billion. According to ABI Research mobile online shopping in the United States rose from $396 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2009. The same survey predicted that mobile would bring in $119 billion by 2015.
Of course not everyone has a smartphone, but the rate that sales are growing suggest that the mobile internet is groing at an even faster pace than the internet did when it started to explde in the mid 1990s.
Many doubted that internet retailing would ever be a big concern in the early days of online shopping, it would be a similarly foolhardy person who would make such predictions about Mobile shopping.
Amazon has operated its Amazon Fresh grocery delivery service in it’s hometown of Seattle since 2007, with the bright green trucks apparently becoming a common site on the city’s streets.
